PROJECT MODEL
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
I want to take this opportunity to thank World youth International and all her supporters toward this noble project of goat breeding. The target group decided to call this project as goat breeding because they wanted to do something different from the normal goat keeping. They wanted to make goat farming their profession as well as their reliable source of income. They set their priorities and strategic actions to enable them to achieve their dreams. The project also has set rules and principles which must be adhered to once you agree to become a member. It is also to be used as a model for replication in the near future, this project is monitored and will be evaluated by UNIVERSAL COMMUNITY FACILITATION AND PROGRAMMING CO LTD, with the assistance of trained youth in MAMA THERESA HOLISTIC CENTRE, it is implemented by Asembo Goat Breeders Association.
OBJECTIVES FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER
1. Planting goat feeds.
2. Constructing goat pen by each individual farmer.
3. Acquiring two local female goats by each farmer.
4. Researching for pedigree bucks and organizing for their purchase.
5. Constructing two buck shades.
6. Conducting two strategic planning meetings,
7. Conducting one training on goat keeping by UCFP.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
· All the ten farmers have planted a quarter of an acre of land with goat feeds, this translates into two and a half acres of land planted with goat feeds, besides they have made more than two bags of hay readiness for dry periods.
· Each farmer has constructed a goat pen and stocked with two female local goats
· Two buck pens constructed by the funds provided by WYI.
· Research for the bucks conducted and two bucks Identified for purchase on the 14th Jan 2013.
· Two meetings and one training facilitated by UCFP were conducted.
CHALLENGES
· 1.Kenya is in electioneering period and politicians are giving too much cash hand outs and this goes against our principles and also affects us directly as unhealthy competition against handouts;
What we are doing about it; we have volunteered to offer voter education freely in order to reduce the high influence of hand out given by politicians, this we do through churches, public baraza and organizing public debates in Mama Theresa holistic center; Results of this action is that people have begun asking for policies and issues instead of handouts.
· 2.People for over a long time have kept local goats but have never attached any value to them, this therefore means that introducing them to a new concept of pedigree goats looks distance and farfetched; what we are doing about it, organizing visits in successful farmers outside the region, the impact of this is amazing as farmers come back with renewed energy.
· 3. The poverty level is high and this needs other quick income earning projects, what we are doing about this; we have initiated Farmer research and innovations initiatives, alternative livelihood initiatives and young entrepreneurs initiatives, this based on the Kenya government’s Rapid Results Initiative (RRI).
